How do you light the Coleman Triton?

With a match. Coleman lists the ignition type as match flame, and the manual gives the steps for a standard ignition stove: hold a lighted match near the burner, then open the burner valve manual. Then adjust the flame with the same knob.

The manual says a good flame is blue with a hint of yellow on the tips. Some yellow tips are acceptable as long as no carbon or soot builds up. To turn the stove off, close both burner valves firmly.

Can you use the Coleman Triton indoors?

No. Coleman Consumer Care answers that its burning appliances should not be used indoors or in enclosed areas, and that they are designed for outdoors Coleman. The manual is firmer still: never use the stove inside a house, camper, tent, vehicle or any other unventilated area.

Before you start

The manual says this stove makes carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell, and that using it in an enclosed space can kill you manual.

Can you run the Coleman Triton off a bigger propane tank?

Yes, with the right Coleman hose. Coleman Consumer Care answers that the Triton takes a 16 oz propane cylinder straight onto the regulator, and that a 20 lb tank works through a Coleman High-Pressure 5-ft Propane Gas Hose Coleman. A separate answer says a 10 lb tank works the same way, with a compatible Coleman hose or adapter.

Coleman's team asks you to check that the hose and adapter suit the Triton, tighten every connection, run a leak check, and keep the tank upright while the stove is lit. The manual adds that the regulator comes preset and must not be adjusted. Coleman also says not to connect its appliances to a recreational vehicle propane system.

Wind guards, grate and latch

Coleman fits two wind guards that help shield and protect the burners from wind Coleman. The manual shows them as the first step after you open the lid, so you set them where you want them before the pot support goes in.

The grate is chrome plated and lifts out for cleanup. A heavy-duty latch holds the stove closed when it is packed away, and Coleman says it opens easily. Coleman also names improved knob rotation for precise temperature and simmer control.

How to set up and use it

  1. Take the components out of the carton: the stove, the pot support, the regulator, and the griddle if you bought one.
  2. Open the lid.
  3. Position the wind guards where you want them.
  4. Install the pot support.
  5. Place the griddle on the pot support, if you have one.
  6. Close both burner valves firmly.
  7. Push and screw the regulator into the stove hand tight.
  8. Take the plastic cap off the top of the propane cylinder, then screw the cylinder into the regulator hand tight.
  9. Check for leaks: brush soapy water on the connections and look for bubbles. Never use a flame.
  10. Set the stove on a sturdy, flat surface outdoors.
  11. Hold a lighted match near the burner, then open the burner valve.
  12. Adjust the flame with the burner valve manual.
Tip

The manual lists four more ways to find a leak: listen for a hiss, feel for extreme cold, smell for a rotten egg odor, and look again for bubbles manual.

Never run the stove with the propane cylinder upside down. When you finish, close both burner valves, let the stove cool, unscrew the cylinder from the regulator, put the protective cap back on the cylinder, then take the regulator off the stove.

Care and quick fixes from the manual

How to clean it

  1. Let the stove and the griddle cool.
  2. Move the stove away from any flame or other ignition source.
  3. Lift off the griddle, if you have one, then lift off the pot support.
  4. Wipe the stove and the griddle with a soft cloth and mild dish detergent.
  5. Skip abrasives, which the manual rules out manual.

The manual asks you to clean the stove often, so that grease does not build up and catch fire.

If you smell gas

  1. Do not try to light the stove.
  2. Check that the stove is in the off position.
  3. Put out any nearby flames.
  4. Disconnect the disposable cylinder.
  5. Leave the area straight away.
  6. Allow 5 minutes for the gas to clear.
  7. If the smell has gone, follow the gas connection steps again.
  8. If you smell gas again, repeat steps 1 to 6 and have the stove serviced manual.

If one burner burns yellow and sooty

Coleman Consumer Care answers this one on the Triton+ page Coleman. On a propane stove, a tube runs under the cook top from each burner to its valve at the front. Two holes near the valve end draw in the air that mixes with the fuel.

  1. Look at the two air holes near the valve end of the burner tube.
  2. Run a small bottle brush, a gun-cleaning brush or a pipe cleaner up inside the tube to shift a spider or insect nest.
  3. Blow the tube clear.
  4. Light the stove again and check that the flame is blue with a hint of yellow on the tips.

How to store it between trips

  1. Disconnect the cylinder from the stove.
  2. Keep the cylinder away from high heat, open flames and direct sunlight.
  3. Keep the stove and the cylinder below 120 °F and above -0.4 °F.
  4. Put the stove in a plastic bag and seal it with a rubber band, to keep basement and garage dust and cobwebs out manual.

If a knob, regulator or pot support needs replacing

The manual lists the part numbers: control knob 2172756, 5430 regulator assembly 2000037055, and pot support 5010001446 manual. Coleman sells stove and grill replacement parts on its own parts pages Coleman. The manual also says the warranty is void if damage comes from using a part that is not a genuine Coleman part.
