!
Filters need 24 hours of air drying. The manual says to rinse them with water and no soap, then let them dry fully before they go back in manual. Plan the wash for a day you can leave the vacuum alone.
!
Shark lists 120 volts and a polarized plug. That makes it a North American machine, and the manual says the warranty excludes products used outside North America Sharkmanual.
!
The manual advises against an extension cord. Work within the 25 foot cord, and move the plug between rooms instead manual.
!
The hard floor tools and the wall mount are sold apart. Shark lists the Dust-Away Hard Floor Attachment, the Hard Floor Hero, the Under Appliance Wand and the Wall Mount as add-ons for this model Shark.
Before you start

How the Shark Rocket HV301 compares
Both machines below come from Shark, so every figure here is Shark's own.
Shark Rocket HV301 vs Shark Rocket Pro HV371
The HV371 Rocket Pro holds more than twice as much in its dust cup, at 0.7 qt against 0.3 qt, and adds LED headlights on the nozzle and the handheld. The HV301 keeps the same 25 foot cord, the same 8.5 inch cleaning path and the same 500 watt motor in a shorter, narrower body Shark HV371.
The PowerDetect HZ4002 is the one to read about if pet hair is the whole job. Shark lists a HEPA filter with an anti-allergen complete seal, a self-cleaning brushroll with no hair wrap, a 0.9 qt dust cup and a 30 foot cord Shark HZ4002. The HV301 answers with a lighter hand vacuum and a simpler two-setting switch.

Can the Shark Rocket HV301 pick up pet hair?
Shark makes no pet hair claim for this model, so none is made here. What Shark does publish is the kit around the hair. The manual describes the Wide Upholstery Tool as a wide path that helps remove pet hair, dust and large debris from mattresses, couches, curtains and lampshades manual.
Hair wraps around any brushroll, and this one is no different. The manual gives a coin-and-scissors routine for clearing it, and names hair as one cause of weak suction.
The 3 pound handheld lifts off the wand for stairs and furniture, which is where most pet hair sits. Shark lists the Wide Upholstery Tool among the add-ons for this model Shark.
Does it work on carpet and hard floors?
Yes. Shark describes it as corded cleaning on carpets and hard floors, with fingertip controls to toggle between surfaces Shark. The switch gives you two settings and an off position.
Setting I is for bare floors and small area rugs, and the brushrolls spin slowly. Setting II is for carpet, and the brushrolls spin faster to pick up debris below the surface manual.
The manual asks for Setting II for deep cleaning under ASTM F 608, the test standard for embedded dirt in carpets. It also suggests Setting II for stuck-on dust.
Tip
If the vacuum lifts a light rug, the manual says to switch off to stop the brushroll, then restart on Setting I manual.
Does the Shark Rocket HV301 have a filter?
Yes. Shark lists the filter type as Washable Foam Filters Shark. The manual splits them into pre-motor filters, a foam one and a felt one, and a separate post-motor filter.
The wash schedule in the manual is monthly for the pre-motor filters and every 9 months for the post-motor filter manual. Rinse with water, skip the soap, and give them 24 hours to dry.
Filters wear out in the end. The manual sets replacement at every 2.5 years for the pre-motor filters and every 3 years for the post-motor filter. Shark lists the Foam and Felt Filter Kit, model XFFV300, as the replacement part for this vacuum.
Three ways to clean with it
The manual names three modes, and all three use the same handheld vacuum manual.
Upright, for floors. Put a foot on the floor nozzle and tilt the handheld back.
Above-floor with the wand, for baseboards, ceiling fans and window sills.
Above-floor handheld, for stairs and furniture.
Swivel Steering is what makes the upright mode easy, and Shark credits it with control in tight spaces and movement around furniture Shark. To free the wand, stand the vacuum up and step on the foot pedal on the left of the nozzle.
How to set up and use it
Insert the wand into the floor nozzle. Make sure every connection clicks into place.
Insert the handheld vacuum into the wand until it clicks.
Turn all controls off, then plug the cord into a polarized outlet.
Slide the switch to SETTING I for bare floors and small area rugs.
Slide the switch to SETTING II for carpet, where the brushrolls spin faster.
To clean floors, put a foot on the floor nozzle and tilt the handheld vacuum back.
To use the wand above the floor, stand the vacuum upright and step on the foot pedal.
Pull the wand up to disconnect it from the nozzle.
Press the Wand Release button to lift the handheld vacuum off for stairs and furniture.
Slide the switch to the bottom to turn the power OFFmanual.
For storage, press the wand release button and take the handheld off. Line the catch on its base up with the storage hook on the wand, then slide it down so it hangs. Wrap the cord around the two cord hooks, top hook first, with a little slack.
Care and quick fixes from the manual
Unplug the vacuum before any maintenance. That line opens every maintenance page in the manual manual.
How to empty the dust cup
Press the wand release button and lift the handheld vacuum off the wand.
Hold the dust cup over the bin.
Press the Empty button on the front of the dust cup.
Do this each time you vacuum, and again when debris reaches the MAX fill line.
How to wash the filters
Unplug the vacuum.
Take out the foam and felt pre-motor filters, and the post-motor filter when it is due.
Rinse them with water. Do not use soap, because it can damage them.
Let them air-dry for at least 24 hours.
Put them back, and make sure the dust cup and all filters are in place.
How to clear the brushroll
Use the edge of a coin to open the three locks on the bottom of the floor nozzle.
Run scissors along the groove in the brushroll to cut away string, carpet fibers and hair.
Line the cover up and rotate it down until it clicks.
Use the coin to close the three locks.
The manual adds one limit for this job. During cleaning, cut nothing except hair, fibers or string wrapped around the brushroll.
The filters need a rinse and a full 24 hours of drying.
The dust cup is full, so empty it.
The floor nozzle has a blockage, so clear it.
String, carpet fibers or hair are wrapped around the brushroll.
The nozzle base is not locked, so snap it down until it clicks and lock all three locks.
To hunt a blockage, check the dust cup intake openings on the handheld, then detach the wand and check that, then open the floor nozzle with a coin and tilt its neck back.
If it turns off on its own
The thermostat shuts the motor off when the vacuum overheats. These are the manual's restart steps manual:
Turn the vacuum off and unplug it.
Empty the dust cup and clean the filters.
Check the nozzle, wand, handheld inlet openings and accessories for blockages.
Let the unit cool for at least 60 minutes.
Plug it in and turn it on.
If the brushroll will not spin
The manual points to the brushroll indicator light on the floor nozzle. A red light means the brushroll has stopped manual.
Turn the vacuum off and unplug it at once, clear the blockage, then plug it back in and switch on. Green means the blockage is gone. If the light stays red, the manual asks you to call Shark Customer Service on 1-800-798-7398.
