  • Only water goes in the tank. The manual says to add no cleaning solutions, vinegar, scented perfumes, oils or other chemicals, because they may damage the mop manual.

How does the Shark Steam Mop work?

You pump the handle, and the mop releases steam through the head into a Dirt Grip pad. Plug it in and the power light comes on. It takes about 30 seconds to heat up and for the steam to be ready manual.

A few downward pumps of the handle start the steam. The manual explains that this pumping action lets you choose how much steam you get. Then you mop forward and backward, and the natural motion of mopping keeps the steam coming.

The pad does the other half of the work. Shark describes the Dirt Grip pad as super-absorbent microfiber that locks in moisture and dirt, with scrubbing material for stuck-on stains manual.

Note

The manual says never to use the mop without a Dirt Grip pad attached and water in the tank manual.

Which floors can you use it on?

Shark lists the S1000 for sealed hard floors Shark. The manual puts it in plainer terms. The mop is designed for hard floor surfaces that will withstand high heat.

The manual then names what to keep it off. Do not use it on unsealed wood or on unglazed ceramic floors manual. It is for flat, horizontal surfaces, so walls, counters and windows are out.

Waxed floors get one more warning. On waxed surfaces, and on some no-wax floors, the heat and steam action may remove the sheen. Shark recommends a test on an isolated area, and a look at the use and care instructions from your floor maker.

Can you use it on carpet?

No. The manual says the Steam Mop is designed to clean hard floor surfaces that will withstand high heat, and Shark lists it for sealed hard floors Shark manual. The box list names no carpet glider.

Does the Shark Steam Mop kill germs?

Shark makes a removal claim, not a kill claim. The product page says the mop removes 99.9% of common household bacteria using water Shark. A footnote on the same page names the five bacteria behind that figure.

Those five are Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica (typhi) and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The footnote adds that the mop is demonstrated to be effective against them when used as directed.

Shark also uses the word sanitize for this mop, with a footnote. Sanitization studies were conducted under controlled test conditions, and household conditions and results may vary Shark manual.

How do you sanitize a floor with it?

The manual sets out four steps manual:

  1. Start with a clean pad.
  2. Pump the handle a few times in a downward motion.
  3. Mop a sealed hard floor forward and backward for three minutes. The unit is then ready to sanitize.
  4. Move the mop over the area you want to sanitize, forward and backward, at least 15 times.

Which water goes in the tank?

Distilled water or tap water, and nothing else manual. The manual asks you to fill the tank completely with one or the other.

Shark recommends distilled water to prolong the life of the mop. It makes the same recommendation for anyone in a hard-water area.

Tip

If the mop leaves water or white spots on the floor, the manual's first suggestion is to switch from tap water to distilled water manual.

How to set up and use it

The mop arrives in three parts, and the manual says to keep it unplugged while you build it and fill it manual.

  1. Line up the handle and the pole so the arrow symbols inside them face forward. Push the pole into the handle until it clicks.
  2. Line up the pole and the mop body so both arrow symbols face forward. Slide the pole into the top of the body until it clicks.
  3. Lay a Dirt Grip pad on the floor with the fastener strips facing up. Press the mop head down onto it.
  4. Sweep or vacuum the floor first.
  5. Lift the water tank up and away from the mop body.
  6. Twist the water tank cap counterclockwise to remove it.
  7. Fill the tank completely with distilled water or tap water.
  8. Put the cap back on and turn it clockwise to seal it.
  9. Align the tank so the cap faces down, place the cap into the hole in the body, and slide the tank down until it clicks.
  10. Pull and twist the quick release cord holder to unwrap the whole cord, then plug it in. The power light comes on.
  11. Wait about 30 seconds for the mop to heat up.
  12. Pump the handle a few times in a downward motion to release steam.
  13. Mop forward and backward. The motion of mopping keeps the steam coming.

The manual adds one limit while you work. Do not scrub any one area for an extended period.

Care and quick fixes from the manual

Unplug the mop before any maintenance, and let it cool before you touch the pad manual.

How to wash the Dirt Grip pads

  1. Unplug the mop and wait 2 to 3 minutes for the pad to cool.
  2. Step on the tab and lift the mop head off the pad, or pull the pad off by hand.
  3. Machine wash the pads separately in warm water with liquid detergent.
  4. Use no bleach, no powdered detergent and no fabric softener. They leave a coating that cuts cleaning performance.
  5. Line dry the pads, or tumble dry them on a low setting.
  6. Trim any loose fibers with scissors. Do not pull them, because the weave can come undone.

How to store it

  1. Unplug the cord and wrap it around the cord hooks.
  2. Raise the handle until the pole stands straight up, which locks the mop upright.
  3. Take the cooled pad off the head, so it cannot damage your floor.
  4. Store the locked mop in a closet or a corner of a room, indoors, somewhere cool and dry.

If it will not turn on

  1. Check that the plug is securely in the outlet.
  2. Check the fuse or the circuit breaker.
  3. If it still does not work, call Shark Customer Service on 1-800-798-7398.

If it will not make steam

  1. Check that there is water in the tank, and refill it if not.
  2. If the tank is full, prime the mop by pumping the handle downward a few times.

If it leaves water or white spots on the floor

  1. Do not leave the mop standing on the floor with a damp or wet pad attached.
  2. Switch from tap water to distilled water.
  3. Check that the cap is securely on the water tank.

If the floor looks cloudy, streaky or spotty

  1. Change to a clean pad, because a dirty pad can cause it.
  2. If you washed the pad with powder detergent, wash it again with liquid detergent.
  3. In a kitchen with grease buildup, clean the area first with an all-purpose cleaner or dish soap and paper towels.
  4. Check that you did not leave the mop in one spot for too long.
  5. If you have hard water, switch to distilled water.
  6. If it is residue from earlier cleanings, steam the floor a few more times to lift it.

If it is hard to push

Check that the Dirt Grip pad is properly attached manual. Shark also notes that loose fibers show pad wear, and recommends new pads every 3 to 4 months.
